Telegram on the Table
(Four levels)
The story ‘Telegram on the Table’ written by Parshu Pradhan
talks about the contemporary situation of a young generation in general and Mr.
Krishna in particular. Krishna had come to the city from the village who had
been working as a tourist guide for a long time. As he becomes busy with
foreigners, he starts to learn English. He listens to English music, dreams in
English and has a conversation in English with foreign friends. Not only had
that he started to dream of going to America by following an American girl. He
has a schedule of retuning room very lately with the tired body due to office
work. The room is not good as it has a scarcity of water and many things
including regular complain of the household. He wanted to leave this room
because the room is the reason where he is not able to call his friend Miss
Panday for dinner.
One day, he received a telegram related to tragic event “death
of his wife.” On that case, one of his best friends has written, ‘I am very
sorry, Krishna has my heartfelt sympathy’. Village boy Krishna left that
telegram on the table carelessly for several days. Because of 10 years long
continue living in the city made him stone hearted where he wanted to forget
the village and his family. But after several days when he returns in his same
uncomfortable resident lately and tiredly and he could not sleep at night so
the same neglected telegram attracted him. He read it once more that touched
his heart now. The telegram was saying “your wife died.” Because of the
telegram, he felt uneasy, upset and tearful so he could not sleep anymore. He
became angry for himself as he had got tremendous and terrible changed. He
remembered his wife and good deed she did in their earlier conjugal life.
Ultimately he has got grief in that great lost and turns into real, practical
life.
Interpretation:
This story is trying to represent realistic and so-called modern
generation through Krishna who resembles the life of the village boys (young
generation) who come to the city with big dreams and ambitious plan. These
people adopt a new language, different lifestyle and slowly they start to
forget their ground reality, birthplace, parents cum own culture which is
ultimately wrong.
Critical Thinking:
This interesting story reflects our contemporary society with
the example of a village boy Krishna. But, there are some points which still we
can raise the question on;
- Is it
possible to forget own wife and be happy in her death?
- Can
anybody transfigure and forget own ground reality totally?
- How
can a boy remain in the city for 10 years long without visiting the village? At least he would go in his earlier years.
Assimilation:
After reading this text, I realized that we mustn’t forget our
ground’s reality, origin, culture, identity and especially our own family. We
can learn different new things, we can visit different new places, we can get
various knowledge and experience but if we will not be able to handle the
influences of those new things, we will spoil our life ultimately that is not
good. So, we must not be so-called modern by pretending rather we must
understand the things properly.
