Scientific Inquiry: Invention and Test (Four levels)

Scientific Inquiry: Invention and Test (Four levels)

Literal Comprehension

A physician; Semmelweis had researched in his hospital; Vienna General Hospital from 1844-1848, during that time there was a high mortality rate of infant and maternity. Fatal illness is also known as puerperal fever or child death fever, a serious issue that was examined in two divisions. Hempel Semmelweis did various tests to find out the cause and solution of the high maternity death rate. During the test, he found various possible causes for the high mortality rate like epidemic atmospheric cosmic telluric changes, cholera, and so on. Semmelweis noted that women come with a baby in their hands after giving birth, on the street carrying bacteria in the hospital which might spread to others. Similarly, injuries from rough examination by the medical students. It is also a reason behind it. Sometimes micro-organisms affect others during the invention and test Semmelweis changed the trend of ringing the bell by the priest, and also the position of delivery. Lots of examination on various hypotheses were done but the conclusion was very distinct from the previous perception. Semmelweis concluded that childhood fever can be caused not only by cadaveric materials but also by putrid (rotten) matters derived from living organisms. So, doctors and nurses must wash their hands before every new test.

Interpretation

This research-based lesson is trying to show us the methods of scientific research. In science, hypothesis imagination supports or blame logic and criticisms are not sufficient to find the scientific goal on the various test. So, Semmelweis emphasizes us not make a fast decision without any experiment.

 Critical Thinking

Though the essay is most relevant, practicable, and useful for us but still one more query knocks our thought that: is it relevant to have various tests on the human body? Being a medical person, why Semmelweis took so long period and much human life to examine?

Assimilation

After reading this science-based essay, I concluded that there are various stages and methodology in any research before making any thesis statement, we go through various processes of research. Thus, I have developed the mentality not to speak lightly without any evidence.
